My desktop computer had a stroke, so I decided to drag out my old laptop and see if it could be usable until my new computer arrives on Thursday.
Windows Vista, baby! I thought it would need more than 28 updates since it hasn’t been started up in nearly 3 years. Also, apparently Chrome won’t work on it anymore because Vista.

Isn’t Windows Vista now end-of-life from Microsoft?
You could put Linux Mint on it and probably be surprised by how well it runs - would make a decent backup computer that way. I run Linux Mint 18.2 MATE on my laptop (my desktop PC has Windows 10) and it runs very well.
What are the specs on that beast?

Yep, support ended this spring.

I’ll consider it, because I can’t afford to upgrade it to 10 and it might not be able to cope with it anyway.
It has an Intel T2080 processor (1.73 GHz) and 2 gigs of RAM. It’s 10 years old. The battery is toast, and so is the wireless card. I have a USB wifi stick that’ll get it onto the internet.
The truth is, I have so little knowledge about computers so I don’t really know what I’m doing.

Hmmm, those specs are a bit low and that is a 32-bit processor, but for basic web browsing or the like, it should be OK with a Linux install. You don’t need to hook it up to a printer or anything do you? Also, would you need to save any of the files that are on the laptop?
Installing Linux isn’t hard and it takes a lot less time than Windows. Do you have a 4GB empty flash driving sitting around anywhere? If so, all you need is to download 2 things, follow some basic instructions, and use that flash drive and you could be sitting at a Linux desktop, fully installed in 30 minutes. I can give you the instructions how to do it if you wanted to try.

We don’t have a printer, so nope. There isn’t anything I need to keep, as all the music I have is on my injured desktop and also on an external hard drive. I probably have a flash drive but need to see what size it is. I may get back with you later today.

For sure, let me know!
